Obituary of George Starvos Kolidakis
George "Mr. K." Starvos Kolidakis, 94, of Hopewell passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in Southside Regional Medical Center. Mr. Kolidakis was preceded in death by his wife, Despina (Loula) Kolidakis, two sons, Stavro and Emmanuel Kolidakis, daughter, Valerie Kolidakis Vurnakes and son-in-law, Constantino "Dean" Vurnakes. George came to the U.S. in 1942 and was owner of the Yankee Coffee Shop from 1975 to 2004, a member of the Saint Elpis Greek Orthodox Church and a 60 year member of the AHEPA, holding every office in the local chapter. He is survived by two grandchildren, Emmanuel Nicholas Kolidakis (Ronnie) and Steve C. Vurnakes (Sasha), three great grandchildren, Khyra, Aryhk and Nikayla Kolidakis, sister-in-law, Esther Vagotis, numerous nieces and nephews , staff and longtime patrons of the Yankee Coffee Shop. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Memorial Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Avenue, Hopewell, VA. There will be a Trisagion Prayer service at 7:00 pm, followed by an AHEPA service. A Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 11:00 am in the Saint Elpis Greek Orthodox Church with Father Jon Emanuelson , Father Andreas Markopoulos and Father Nick Bacalis officiating.
