Deepest Sympathies to Huggins Family. My Dad introduced me to Dr. Huggins in 1964 as he prepared to perform a tonsillectomy on me - I was 15 years old. They were former high school classmates in BHAM, AL.
My Dad was truly saddened to hear the news of his passing.
We pray your peace and comfort during this time of transition.
Respectfully,
Roland H. Crowder, Jr.

In 1984 as a sailing instructor at the Cleveland Sailing School, I was the captain of the Chorus one of the 33 ft sailboats the school had chartered for a week on the Chesapeake. Clarence and 5 others spent the week aboard sailing from Annapolis to Kent Narrows, Saint Michaels, and the Solomons. Six people living on a small boat for a week makes life interesting, getting to know everyone's personalities. Doc Huggins was truly memorable. To this day I repeat some of his WWII stories spent in the Pacific working heavy machinery and I suppose I've forgotten many more of his experiences from medical to political, but what has remained indelible are his true Christianity, sense of humor, gentle way, and his diplomatic and kind speech. When we had scotch, he had a little. The absolutely fresh just-caught bluefish.. maybe a little more. A month or so later we had a party at our house in Lakewood and I got to meet Mrs. Huggins, as much a lady as Doc was a gentleman, both superlative. A few years later Doc asked me to provide a reference to his sailing abilities when he chartered a boat on his own no problem. Many placed their life in his hands medically, and sailing was a breeze for him. Clarence is off on a cruise and we here on earth are waving farewell and must just wait our turn, but I'm looking forward to meeting him again!

I had the privilege to meet Dr. Huggins a couple of years ago when I flew to Richmond to "interview" him. Age was ravishing his body, but his mind was sharp as a tack. His fortitude was still very impressive. I am saddened at his passing because "we" have lost another truly great man. While we celebrate the hip-hop and reality-TV idols, Dr. Huggins was a living legend truly worthy of our children--and adults--to emulate. His life was the stuff books are written about and movies are made. One of things the obit did not mention was that Dr. Huggins was also a paratrooper. His son, Clarence Jr., would go on to follow in his dad's footsteps as a paratrooper.
Each of us was born with a purpose. Too many of us will die without fulfilling or even knowing that purpose. The late Dr. Myles Munroe maintained that the graveyard is the riches place on the planet because of all the gifts and talents, books, and businesses that never manifested, are buried there. That cannot be said of Dr. Huggins. He lived the life God gave him and he lived it to the very end.
Dr. Huggins, may our heavenly Father greet you with "well done, my good and faithful servant." Rest in Peace, sir.
To Marie, Daph, Patty, family, fraternity, and friends: Weeping may endure for the night, but joy will come in the morning. His legacy--and WOW what a legacy--lives.
In Christ,
R
