Obituary of Robert Richardson Emory

On October 3, 2017, Robert Richardson Emory, Sr. died peacefully surrounded by his family's love in his apartment at McCarthy Court, New Bern, NC. He was born in Surry County, VA on October 6, 1920 and lived there until he left to attend Randolph Macon College in Ashland, VA where he earned a B.S in Chemistry. After college he moved to Hopewell, VA to work for Allied Chemical Company producing critical material for the war effort. Soon after moving to Hopewell he met and married the love of his life, Frances Parker. When he was 65 he retired from Allied Chemical and worked part-time at Gould Funeral home for the next 10 years as he continued to reside in Hopewell. He and Frances moved in 2013 to McCarthy Court in New Bern, NC to be closer to family. In April, 2017 they celebrated their 70th anniversary just two months before Frances's death. He is survived by his children, Bob Emory, Jr (Lindy) and Susan DiVittorio (Ernie); grandchildren, Francie Emory LaRue (Monty), Betsy Emory Jutras (Rob), Paul Rasnick, Ernesto DiVittorio (Amalia), Damien DiVittorio (Courtney), Dominic DiVittorio (Stephanie) and great grandchildren Emory, Chase and Teague LaRue, Henry and Parker Jutras, Alexandra, Jaclyn, Anthony, Isabella and Gabriella DiVittorio and Caleb Finn. Bob was proud that he grew up on a small family farm and grateful that he had the chance to attend college during the depression. He was an avid Randolph Macon fan and supporter, who was proud to be a member of the Old Grads. Bob was a person of great faith and was an active member of First Baptist Church in Hopewell, VA., where he taught Sunday School and served on the Deacon Board and Counting and Usher Committees. For his entire life he epitomized faithfulness, honesty, kindness and humility and provided an example for all who knew and loved him. He was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. When the Sox finally won the World Series a few years ago his family was afraid that having waited so long for it to happen, he might die; however, delighted that he lived to see more Red Sox success. He was happy to know just before he died that the Sox clinched the division; however, he would have been displeased to learn that the Yankees clinched the Wild Card! The family wishes to thank the care givers of Home Instead Senior Care, the staff at McCarthy Court, the staff on the Fourth Floor Neurology Ward of the Carolina East Medical Center and Bayview Rehabilitation Center in New Bern, NC for their incredible care and kindness. There will be a visitation at First Baptist Church Hopewell at 2 PM on Saturday, October 7th; followed by the funeral at 3 PM. Burial will be at Appomattox Cemetery.
